Speaking about lyrics

Tamil song lyrics are usually about lovers writing off their blood, their heart, lungs, males demanding uterus  so they can carry their lover - very biology oriented but more importantly it is always about the intensity or passion.

Which is why "Malai neram" stood out. (Yeah, yeah I know the movie came out couple of years ago, but I noticed this song and its lyrics  only now. ) This comes in relationship zone, about feelings one isnt writing their lfe off to. There is slightly breezy attitude and it is beautiful. In some ways more realistic. And written by - hold your breath - Selvaraghavan - you cant blame me for never suspecting this out of him.

I loved these two lines in particular.

 "Oru kaalaiyil nee illai
Thedavum manam varavillai"

"En thedalkal nee illai... 

Un kanavugal naan illai "

 

My favorite in tamil usually is Diamond pearl.  Thamarai too.

Some one please tell me why Thamarai didnt write for nee thane en ponnvasantham. I mean isnt that one assured good thing about Gautham menon's movie? Instead we have an insipid lyrics writer. This guy, Na muthukumar once came on a TV show and asked G V Prakash if he would rather do music for a good movie for a fee of 1 rs or a bad movie with a fee of 1 crore. Clearly he is cut out only for 1st grade moral stories and only that.

Diamond pearl's son writes lyrics these days. It is disappointing - though he redeemed himself with Kadal - In Adiye - his imagination roars.

I cant remember his previous outing to be good.

But I find the use of strong appropriate tamil words  - words with a beauty of their own - a very crucial component of lyrics  - something I learnt to appreciate only from Vairamuthu's lyrics missing.

May be Vairamuthu was just one off case and we wont find someone like him again?

 

The words RIP has never had any meaning in my mind, so I wont be able to use that. I do believe in God and the girl should have lived. Lived the life she wanted - if she wanted marriage and kids, that what she should have got or whatever she wanted out of life. She wanted to live, she should have.

1. Govt flew her to singapore and she got the best of the facility, couple of rape cases in the country  - one of the 13 yr old girl who died in Tuticorin and another case in bihar are treated with prompt attention - these wouldnt have happened without the continuous protests in delhi. Thanks to all of them.

2. Name of the Girl hasnt come out till date. In a Country which routinely kills the like of Satyendra dubey( by releasimg his name from the very offices of the Prime Minister when he had specifically requested in the letter not to), this is a big big big step. But a basic one. Fundamental right.

3. Even with whole country protesting, if even one of the accused had been even remotely connected to congress party( like a politicans bil's cobrother's son), no arrest would have been made.  These guys were nobody so were arrested immediately.

4. Journalist like barkha dutt would go around writing how people are protesting only because it is affecting the middle class so would the JNU graduates. Because middle class to them is a disgusting word. Not to me.

To me, this appears to have been a breaking point. There is only so much we can take.

On a side note, Ranbir kapoor should shut up on any non film related issue. I didnt know these dump grandkids of yester year hindi actors lived in utopia that can only exist for them. Next time ask him to accompany you to police station, enjoy the utopia.

5. Delhi is the worst when it comes to woman. As a woman who has gone through a lot at ages when she had no idea of what it is to be a woman, I would say of all the horror stories i hear from my friends from different corners of India, delhi is hands down the worst.

I will repeat this again and again, a crime was committed against a woman, she can survive and move on with life. I hardly see this, people in india still consider it as an end. It is an end to the perpetrator of the crime.

7. I dont think India needs stricter punishment against rape. The problem here is with the courts and policemen who dont do their job properly. Current laws do prescribe punishment for rape. 


But,  One of the opt repeated statement is men cant help it. There are loads of men who are perfectly able to control their urges. Women too.

 It is for those Men who cant help, should be helped with castration. This is employed as a solution for perpetual sex offenders in USA. That is the only change in law that would be required.

This isnt a momentary emotional response but rather an analytical one.

9. There are some who point out the repressed attitude towards sex in India as a reason but I dont think these men would get any in any culture. It would involve charming a woman or atleast attracting her for a one night stand - psychos like these wont be able to pull that off.


10. Mob culture would lead to anarchy, lawlessness, innocent victims being affected and unnecessary property damage. We have already witnessed the effects through shiva sena's, PMK, DMK and other political parties antics.

Inspite of the above points, I feel good about India's protests through the anna hazare movement last year and the protests that happened after this incident.

Politicians - the congressmen reactions have been alarming. They dont understand why the hell are we protesting, we arent politicians. P Chidambram to Sheila dixit to even Barkha dutt( she is one among them?) they all look at it as if it is some silly act.

But to me, this is the result of years of inaction, apathy. Congress still doesnt realise the shift in people's mood. It is too busy hiding its billions.

 Here is to more such protests and an actual system change in the future.

1. You are no different than the perpetrators of the crime, considering that was exactly the question by those satans too - what are you doing with a guy at this time? You guys must be soul brothers.

2. Sine you dont buy the logic that we lock up the animal and criminals, not the victims, Men can get raped too. So I suggest you dont step out of your house.

3. I really pity your mother, sister and daughter,  I cant imagine any girl in her right mind would have married you.

I just came back from a vacation and caught up with the news. After all these years, you think news will not have an impact on me but #Delhi you managed that. i have tears rolling down for the girl. She will survive, she will and lead a  life achieving every thing she wants out of life.

The perpetrators will face the iron rod many many more times. These sort of people should never have been born and they dont have a right to breathe. We dont have oxygen to spare.

The daughters of the nation will walk at all times of the day and night, wearing whatever they fancy will not take abuse lying down and give right back. 

Those of the human male species that cant take that - refer to the tile. 

Thuppakki

In some Surya-jyothika starrer, Surya would say, " Avanga summa ve oru rooba kudtha nooru roobaku nadipanga". i.e " If you give her a rupee, she would act for 100.  That is true for each of the north imports of tamil cinema. They have five general expressions (some sub sub set of the navarasas) which they show based on a general arc of the scene. You know - sad, anger, happy. In general Crappy. 

Kajal aggarwal, the usual bollywood reject(rejection is obv. on looks, as acting isnt a criteria for any femlae actor) but light skinned so imported to Tamil/Telugu cinema, is just that. I really wished they would have cast the girl who dubbed for her, the voice sounded so much more appropriate than her.

On top of this, every time she appeared in a scene, a song was bond to follow. A precursor scene to each song is Kajal's screen time in this movie. And that scene comes regularly at wierd story points. When you are wondering what happened to guy currently being hidden/ kidnapped/ killed, here is there is google/ swiss ... general tamil song.


Strangely, I got used to this Rhythm.  Some one explain this to me.

Otherwise, the movie was pretty watchable. You must have heard it by now, Vijay and every one else speak Hindi/English quite often like a normal person in that role would do.  The movie doesnt dumb itself down. It isnt super intelligent to begin with. "sleeper cells" are used as if they are Alqaeda/ some random terrorist orgranization name.

The last 15 mins were kadi with regular vijay crap. 

But it definitely right next to Ghajini for Murugadoss.

Vijay's acting has improved compared to Nanban, in ten years I bet he will be a very good actor. oh, he has already been here for 20?

PS: Somewhere along, I thought you know considering all the battles are really done inland, why not use atleast quarter of the army towards curbing terrorism?

Book recommendation

Back again.

The last one helped me discover the world of David Sedaris.

Tell me about a book you have read recently that made you want to go out and recommend to every one you met. Even to the girl who walked by the mountain view library, I am not an intellectual not really interested in books. (I didnt expect her to say it at all).

A bus to nowhere

Have you ever told someone that you want to runaway, take a break from everything, away from all the contact?

I did, out of stress. And every person I mentioned, friend/acquaintace, wanted to come along.
Every one wanted a break, dreaming of running away. 

Eventually we would need a bus, I figured!

Ps: I am past the place of thinking of a  break.

Sometimes one needs a contrast to remind you of how good something is.
Proof:
    - Shahrukh in kbc along with Katrina. He appeared super intelligent( he is but it just appeared magnified)
    - Watching Vijay in Nanban, I went back to watch Aamir in 3 idiots just to see how wonderful he had done. And for all that, when I first watched 3idiots, I hadnt given a thought to Aamir.

"No country in the world should be allowed to have a religious basis in its constitution". This goes to Nepal, all those arab countries and Christian nation"

 Making some one die when it was be easily preventable and when the patient herself has clearly communicated the choice for your religious belief, I hope there is a special catholic hell for each one of you.

I havent read the details of "right to education" that was implemented a year or so ago. But the snippets  like 10-15% reservation for poor, better student to teacher ratio all sound good.

That is on paper.

In reality, below is all we are going to get out of it.
" Hyderabad, principals at several private schools said inspectors regularly threatened them with closings unless they paid bribes. Now, the principals say, the inspectors are wielding the threat of the Right to Education requirements and seeking even bigger bribes."

To get a good intentioned law is difficult. The ones that do end up good, only becomes a tool in the hands of the officials.

I answered these questions here few days back. Posting it here with few edits.

1. God exists. Yes or no?
Hopefully God exists. atleast some phenomenon which receives my prayers or wishes and acts on them!

2. Religion. Source of good over history, or not?
Anybody could do anything as long as it doesnt end up hurting being bad for some one else. Period. that is the only dogma I wish the world followed. Btw, religion is awesome, it comes loaded with fun cultural aspects and also provides immense relief during troubled times.

however, the caveat of forcing people and obstructing people's freedom can very easily be avoided.

3. Mt Rushmore. Who belongs there the most? the least? If you could add another head, who would it be?
A few friends of mine started a trip without an actual destination and ended up at Mt. Rushmore.
That is the only way I find it acceptable to be talked about.

4. Adult beverage. Beer? Wine? or Cocktail?
Diet Caffeine Free Coke. That is all adults these days can handle

5. Extraterrestrial life. Yes or no? Is there intelligence out there?
I hope so and hopefully the men look like Aamir Khans and Tom Cruise’s and women less attractive than me.

6. Mea culpa. Who is the person, living or dead, that you’d most like to apologize to?
I apologize then and there. Because I cant sleep otherwise. I am troubling my parents a lot these days but that is beyond me. I would like them to visit me once more to get something right.. but i dont see a point in apologizing about those. I have done that.. but the real deal is into not do those mistakes.

7. Favorite vacation. Beach chair, ski slope, foreign city, theme park, natural wonder, or visit with family?
Visit with family/friends is the key. Camping under the sky with few hikes thrown in/ Beach chair

8. Meat. Love it? Won’t eat it? Eat it, but feel sort of guilty about it sometimes?
Wont Eat it. I am not an Animal lover. I think God ensured I was born in a vegetarian family to save the animals, otherwise there would have been serious damages to animal kingdom. I have met people who have chosen vegetarianism. I am pretty sure I wouldnt have done that.

Mostly my vegeterianism is due to my upbringing, I dont think I am too fond of meat eating as a choice.

9. Sports. Die hard fan, or don’t care?
First of all, Answers should never have to binary. Fun to watch and play.

10. Music. What is your favorite instrument to play, or would you like to play?

Nenjukulla

This seems difficult to sing along. may be the reason the singer is able to pull off is she isnt a native speaker of the lanaguage? As in the her pronunciation isnt too bad but if you or I sing the song, we would be stressing the letters and words as they should be but then the poem wouldnt just fit into this music, no?

The muusic  seems to run fast unable to contain its exuberanc:)


Still, its an absolute pleasure to listen to it. I have been doing it for the past 24 hours.  Look at Rahman's face in the beginning. The serneity could be yours too.

On the peom by diamond pearl, as reduntant as it sounds, i am still going along with the word 'poetic'. Mostly, I dont have the ability to open a book of poems and admire them as they are. ( Bharathiyaar is an exception). So when some one puts in a context like this, it is nice then people like who wouldnt have otherwise got the poem get to enjoy it.

" you shouldnt be thinking about this when you have a major problem to worry about." This is something I have told myself ( with sadness) and others ( which I took with a bit of anger, finding it too restrictive yet logical) have told me for past few years.


With all the turmoil going around for the past few weeks, even i cant seem to find a way to run off .. 
Blogging seemed too trivial.

Barfi

Caught the final show before it was going to be removed from theatres.

I have always liked Anurag basu from Gangster. There is fullness and cohesiveness in his films, that is sometimes very distubingly absent even in super hit ones. Ofcourse, I ddint watch Kites( mostly i never will - same goes for K3G, KANK, ). But this movie, he has elevated himself beyond whatever he has done before. He is the one who stood out the most as I walked out of the theatre.

Even in Ranbir's and Priyanka's near perfect performance, I could somehow only see Anurag Basu. Illeane pulls it off.

Regarding all the lifted scenes, you could remove some of those and movie would have still worked. So it is quite strange that he had to take the route and people are cornering movie based on this.   But this story, the way the characters play well within the frame of disabilities seems pretty original. and that should count, right?

Strangely, Illeana's arc is the one that stood out most for me - I am guessing it was because she was the most vocal in the movie - strange, I agree.

Usually, I would check time quite a few times during a movie and I didnt even once. The first 10 minutes is what streamed a stretch. Also. this 1972, 1978 was confusing quite a bit.

And Music, it has been playing for more than a month in my car. For non Rahman album that is quite rare.  I hate to admit it, I know Pritam is synonymous with plagarism but they are still worthy of a listen, you know?

Katrina Kaif apparently couldnt do the movie due to date issues. I think that single  factor helped the movie the most ::)
